Do you know what I did last night?

When I was a little girl, my brother Marc used to bring home garbage.  He and his friend Anton would scour the town looking at the bulky waste stuff people threw out.  Sometimes he brought home some good stuff like the hat boxes my mom turned into planters that still grace the front of her house 25 years later.  Sometimes he brought home crap like the carpet sweeper that never really swept (and then became our garbage or perhaps someone else’s treasure).  Last summer, I randomly passed a house located near my brother David’s brewery (yes my family owns a brewery!) and they had a ton of kid stuff out on the curb.  I picked up a red, plastic Little Tikes car that was missing the top, but had no sharp edges or screws sticking out.  My kids loved it.  They still play with it.  A little cleaning and elbow grease and that thing was the best new toy they had last summer (and still have this summer!).  I would have taken more, but my van is so full of various size strollers, I didn’t have room for the play set they had out.  And by the time I emptied my car and went back, it was gone.  Last night, I went back to that house.  The town it is in (next town over from me) only has bulky waste once a month and generally people have piles in front of their houses – so the pickins can be good.  I took the chance that this particular house might have some more kid stuff out, but unfortunately they didn’t.  I cruised some streets nearby, but didn’t see anything worth taking this time.  But, yes, I admit it.  I am a garbage picker.  Make fun of me all you want.  They do say that one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure and my kids’ red car is a testament to that.  And it brings back a fond memory of my brother who passed away 10 years ago and something I can share with him even though he is no longer with us.
