The Gentleman

Every Tuesday, my church runs a soup kitchen that serves about 35-40 people, a number that shocked me a bit since we really don’t live in an urban area.  Tonight, our church held a paying fundraiser (a very tasty Jamaican dinner!) and one of the gentleman that patronizes the soup kitchen walked in.  He sat at our table.  Our pastor approached him with care, letting him know that this was not a free meal like the soup kitchen, but that he was welcome to stay.  My family picked up the cost of his dinner.  Though this gentleman was clearly a bit drunk, he was very friendly and polite, hence my use of the word gentleman.  He thanked us for being so kind and welcoming and tolerant of “people like him” and proceeded to shake my father-in-law’s hand before leaving (knowing nothing that we picked up his dinner).  There are many people in this world less fortunate than you or I – whether it be by choice or by circumstance.  Please remember this, now and especially as this holiday season approaches.  Be grateful for for what you have.  Appreciate the little things in life.  And if you can, help someone who is in need.  Blessings!
